History of poker
Poker is the earliest of the games which involved betting, bluffing and hard rankings. Poker closely resembles the Persian game As Nas. There is evidence that a game, which is known as poque, a French game which was similar to poker was earlier played around various regions where poker was originated. The name poker originates from the Irish Poca or even French Poque which means to brag as a bluff. It also shares ancestry with the Renaissance game primero and the French brelan. It is also possible that all of these earlier games influenced the development of poker as it is played nowadays. The modern school of thoughts does not believe in these ancestries. They only focus on the card play in the game; the unique features of poker are developed from many games available earlier. The feature of poker which is betting has not appeared in any older game ever played. Poker originated in mid 1700’s and was spread throughout the region of Mississippi River. This game was played in various forms, with a pack of 52 cards, and included both stud and straight poker. The 20 card poker game was a game for two players. As the game spread north along the Mississippi River during the period of gold rush, it became a part of ethos, a frontier panel. Sometime after this, flush was introduced and the full 52 pack was introduced. The draw was added in 1850’s. Also, during the civil war, many variations were introduced in the game including stud poker and the straight.
Game play
In the casual game play, the dealing of the hand in the game is rotated among the various players and this is marked by a buck or a dealer button. In a casino, where this game is played extensively, the house dealer has the right to handle the cards for each hand, but the button which is typically a white plastic disk is rotated in the clockwise direction among the players playing in order to determine a nominal dealer to determine the betting order. One or more players have to make a forced bet, which are blind bets or ante or sometimes both. The dealer then shuffles the cards, the person sitting one hand right to him cuts the cards, and the dealer deals or gives the appropriate number of cards to the players. It is optional to give the cards face up or face down, which depends on the variation of poker which is being played. After the 1st round, the betting rounds begin. Between the rounds, the hands of players are dealt in certain ways, by dealing additional cards or replacing the previous ones. At the end, all the bets are gathered into the central pot. At any time of the round, if one player bets and others choose not to call the bet, the hand is terminated immediately, the betting player is awarded the pot and no cards are required to be shown. This is made possible by bluffing, which is the main feature of poker. If at the end, more than one player remains, there is showdown, in which the player shows the hidden cards and evaluates their hands. The player with best hand wins the pot.
Variations in the game
Poker is a game with many variations to play with. These follow a similar pattern of play and use the same hand ranking hierarchy in the game. The family of variants is mainly three in number, based on the protocol of card dealing and betting. These are
Straight: This is a type where complete hand id dealt to each player, and each player has to bet in one round. Here, raising and re-raising are allowed. This is the oldest in the poker family, this is the root of the game of the past which was known as Primero which further evolved into the game called Three Card Brag, a very famous game in USA and is also played in the UK even today. The “straight” hand of 5 cards is used as the final showdown, though the poker is played today with different strategies.
Stud: The card in this game are dealt in a prearranged combination of face up or downs or “streets” followed by a round of betting. Seven Card Stud is the most popular in variation today.
Draw: in this type, a complete hand is dealt to each player, which is face down. After the process of betting, players can change their hand by discarding the cards not required and they are dealt new ones.
Community: this is a variation of stud; here the players are dealt with an incomplete hand of cards which are faced down. After this, a number of face up cards of “community” are dealt to the table center, each of which is used by the players to make a 5 card hand. Omaha is a well known variant of this family.
Poker
Poker is one of the major games played in the family of the various card games available. This game has some betting rules and also the hand rankings. The poker games differ I various aspects, depending on the dealing of the cards, the forming of hands, whether the low or the high hand wins the pot, though in some games the pot is split between the low and the high hands, the limitations of the bet and number of betting round allowed. In the poker games played today, there is some kind of forced bet involved in the beginning. Each player in their turn have to either match the maximum bet or fold involved previously, or have to lose all the further interest in the game play. The player who is matching the bet has the option to rise, thereby increasing the bet amount. The round of betting ends when all the players have either folded or matched the last bet. If all players except one fold on any round, the remaining players can collect the pot without showing his hand. If more than one players are in contention after the final round of betting, the hands are shown and the hand which wins takes away the pot. This betting system differentiates poker form the other gambling games. Except the initial forced bets, money is betted voluntarily into the pot by the players who believe that their bet has positive expected value. The expectations in the long run of the player are determined mostly by their actions which are based on probability.
